چکیده

Haydu, S. P. (1974). Thorax, 29,232-236. Single breath transfer factor measured concurrently by two methods in asthmatic and normal subjects. There have been conflicting reports that the single breath transfer factor for carbon monoxide in asthma may be normal, high or low. To resolve this point the single breath transfer factor was measured in comparable groups of asthmatic and normal subjects. Two methods of calculating the alveolar volume were used, employing multiple breath helium dilution (giving TL) and single breath helium dilution (giving TL'). A higher value was found for TL than for TL' in the asthmatic subjects but a lower value for TL than TL' in the normal subjects. These differences were significant. The largest differences

Effect of inhaled ozone on exhaled nitric oxide, pulmonary function, and induced sputum in normal and asthmatic subjects.

BACKGROUND Nitric oxide (NO) may have a role in the pathophysiology of tissue injury in response to inhaled ozone in animals. METHODS A double blind, randomised, placebo controlled, crossover study was undertaken to investigate the effects of inhaled ozone in 10 normal and 10 atopic asthmatic volunteers. Subjects were exposed to 200 ppb ozone or clean air for four hours with intermittent exer...

ENHANCED HISTAMINE H I RECEPTOR BLOCKADE WITH CHLORPHENIRAMINE IN THE ASTHMATIC TRACHEO-BRONCHIAL TREE: FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR INCREASED DRUG DELIVERY IN ASTHMA

We have measured the competitive antagonistic effect of chlorpheniramine in bronchi of 8 normal and 12 asthmatic subjects. Classical pharmacological theory states that the degree of competitive antagonism depends only upon 1) antagonist concentration at the receptor, and 2) receptor affinity. Delivery and affinity also influence agonist responsiveness, but measurement of bronchial antagoni...

SHORT TERM VARIATION OF ATROPINE BLOCKADE IN THE TRACHEOBRONCHIAL TREE OF ASTHMATIC SUBJECTS

In asthmatic subjects there is a pronounced diurnal variation in bronchial responsiveness. If this phenomenon is due to variation in factors that control drug delivery, then it should be paralleled by a similar variation in competitive antagonist blockade. In order to study this possibility, we performed the methacholine challenge test and after 45 minutes, administered atropine by inhalat...

Comparison of the single breath with the intrabreath method for the measurement of the carbon monoxide transfer factor in subjects with and without airways obstruction.

BACKGROUND Measurement of the carbon monoxide transfer factor (TLCO) has traditionally been performed using the single breath method but recently the intrabreath method has been developed. The aim of this study was to compare the two methods in the clinical evaluation of patients with obstructive and non-obstructive pulmonary disorders. METHODS Measurements of TLCO with the intrabreath method...

Measurement of pulmonary resistance and dynamic compliance with airway obstruction.

We compared four algorithms by using least squares regression for determination of pulmonary resistance and dynamic elastance in subjects with emphysema, normal subjects, and subjects with asthma before and after bronchoconstriction. The four methods evaluated include 1) a single resistance and elastance, 2) separate resistances and elastances for each half breath, 3) separate inspiratory and e...
